ADULT LEARNING
The first thing we usually hear when we encourage someone, especially adults, to learn Mandarin is “It’s too hard!” ..but we think that isn’t true!
Learning any language takes time, dedication and patience. And it’s true, Chinese is rated as one of the hardest languages in the world to master.
But you can learn to communicate in Mandarin in just 3 months!
How can we say this? Because the way we teach Mandarin focuses on what is important for you. We don’t try to teach you everything at once!
You don’t need to learn to write Chinese.
It’s true that it takes a long time to learn to write Chinese (many many years!), but you don’t have to learn to write in order to speak! For adult courses we teach the pinyin writing system that represents the characters in regular roman script.
Tones aren’t hard!
The next scary thing you’ve heard is that Chinese has so many tones and each word can have many meanings! While it’s true, every other language does too! Don’t be scared by tones, when you learn words, you are already learning the tones, and we have easy fun ways to help you remember.
No Grammar!
Mandarin has very few grammar rules or tenses. Just say a few words and don’t worry…it’s easy to get your message across!
What can you expect after 3 months?
If you join a class for three months, at the end you can expect to be able to have short conversations in Mandarin. We generally cover 12 topics like saying hello, food, drinks, transport, etc.
Remember your Goals!
Most adults who need to learn some Mandarin really only need to learn the basics. If you want to travel to China, it helps to know how to tell the taxi driver where you want to go…discussions about philosophy can wait 🙂 If you need Mandarin for work, think about the most important concepts (food, emergencies, shopping). All you need to know are the key words! Chinese are very fun people and always happy to meet you in the middle!
